How to Properly Celebrate Your Customer’s Birthday

May 28, 2014 By Joe Rawlinson

I recently had a birthday and was surprised to see my email inbox flooded with birthday greetings from companies I’ve done business with.

The problem was that many of these emails were a total waste of time.

Are you sending useless birthday emails to your customers? Let’s find out.

I got two types of emails which are particularly noteworthy.

While I realize all the emails were automated and not really sent by a human with a personal touch, the content of the emails made them stand out.

One class of customer birthday email was a generic “Happy Birthday” greeting with no additional value added.

The other class of email contained what everyone loves to get on his or her birthday: a present.

Ditch Generic Emails

You may be tempted to send an automated birthday greeting just so you stay top of your customer’s mind.

Don’t do it.

These emails are annoying and aren’t what someone wants to receive on their happy day.

I got boring, stale automated greetings from my bank and my dentist. Of course, neither of these institutions is very exciting to begin with. However, that is where the opportunity lies.

Even if you are in a boring industry, you can do something exciting on your customer’s birthday.

Bring the Gifts

Who doesn’t like to receive a gift on their birthday?

I’m sure you like pleasant surprises on your birthday. Don’t you think your customers would like that to?

Yes, they would.

I got an email from a local Taco shop with a coupon for a free meal. Awesome!

Yes, the email was automated.

Yes, I knew it was a ploy to get me to come to their store and spend more money.

But it was still a gift. Something for free. A birthday present. I was happy.

What can you give your customers on their birthday?

A discount? A free product? A bonus?

People love gifts. They expect gifts on their birthdays.

Don’t disappoint your customers. Give a good gift and build a loyal customer.
