How Learning to Walk is Like Running Your Business

November 10, 2010 By Joe Rawlinson

My toddler-aged daughter recently mastered walking. Her typical day was a pattern of how you can have a successful business.

Falling Down and Failure

My daughter fell down nearly every few steps. This would seem disheartening, but she would pull herself back up and take some more steps.

With each interaction of this cycle, she would get a little bit better.

Your business will have problems, troubles, and even all-out failures. That’s part of life.

Picking yourself up after you fall will make you stronger, wiser, and better equipped to conquer the next challenge.

Tripping and Sabotage

Our sons will sometimes stick their legs out and trip our daughter. She will fall and most of the time shake it off, pull herself up, and keep walking.

Customers will treat you badly. Competitors will attack you and your business. Will you shake it off, adjust your plan, and move on? Or will you stay down for the count?

Attitude

Even though my daughter was falling down all the time, she didn’t become a grumpy bear. She remained happy and cheerful. After all, she could taste the freedom of walking and the liberation it brings, which helped her see through the temporary setbacks she was encountering.

Keep your focus on your long term goals. If you fall, pick yourself up and try again.
